Jamaican Beef Patties are found throughout the Caribbean. They
are a curry flavored meat pastry sort of like a hand held pot
pie. Although this recipe called for beef, chicken, pork or even
goat is just as great.
Beef Patty Pastry:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder
1 large pinch salt
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup water
Beef Patty Filling
2 tablespoons butter
1 pound ground beef
1 yellow onion, finely diced
1 teaspoon curry powder
1 teaspoon fresh thyme
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 cup dry bread, crumbled
1 egg, beaten
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
In a large bowl, combine flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder,
and large pinch of salt.
Cut in butter and shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in water until it forms a ball.
Roll dough into a log then cut into 10 equal sections. Make a
6 inch circle of each section of dough (approximately 1/8 inch
thick). Set them aside.
Melt remaining 2 Tablespoons butter in a skillet and saute onion
until soft and clear. Mix in ground beef, curry powder, fresh
thyme, sea salt and ground black pepper. Evenly brown beef stirring
constantly. Pour in beef broth and bread crumbs and simmer until
fairly dry and remove from heat.
Spoon equal amounts of filling on each pastry circle, staying
away from the edge. Fold pastries in half and seal edges with
a fork. Brush the top of each patty with beaten egg. Place on
cookie sheet.
Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown
and delicious.
Enjoy!
